The rules worth keeping
- Only ever stake money you can afford to lose entirely. Treat it as the price of an evening out, not an investment.
- Set a deposit limit before your first deposit, not after a bad session. Every UK-licensed operator must offer one.
- Never chase a loss. Increasing stakes to recover money is the single clearest warning sign of harm.
- Never gamble with borrowed money, on credit, or with money set aside for bills, rent or food.
- Set a time limit too. Use reality checks so you can see how long you have been signed in.
- Do not gamble to cope with stress, loneliness, grief or low mood.
- Never gamble while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or when you are exhausted.
- Accept that the odds favour the operator. Over enough time, the house edge wins. There is no system that changes this.
Warning signs to take seriously
If any of these sound familiar, pause and speak to one of the organisations below. Recognising it early makes it far easier to deal with.
- Gambling for longer or with more money than you intended, repeatedly.
- Hiding how much you gamble from family, a partner or friends.
- Borrowing, selling possessions or missing bills to fund a deposit.
- Feeling restless, irritable or anxious when you try to cut back.
- Gambling to escape worry, or to win back what you lost.
- Losing interest in work, study, relationships or things you used to enjoy.

Protecting under-18s
18+ It is illegal for anyone under 18 to gamble in the United Kingdom. If you share a device with a young person, use parental controls and consider filtering software such as Net Nanny or Internet Matters guidance. Never leave an account signed in on a shared device, and never let anyone under 18 use your account.
How to check an operator is legitimate
Before depositing anywhere, find the operator on the UK Gambling Commission public register and confirm the status reads as active. Both brands in our index link directly to their licence record — Parimatch and SmoothSpins are both recorded under account number 39576. If an operator is not on the register, it is not licensed to take your money in Great Britain.
If you need to stop right now: close this tab, call 0808 8020 133, and register with GamStop. It takes a few minutes and blocks every UK-licensed operator at once.
